Workwear Lookbook
Lawsuit = Lawyer + Fashion Suit.
Today is the first day of trial. The first day of my first trial in my entire legal career. ‘May it please your Ladyship, I am Miss LRGirl, and I appear on behalf of the appellant in this matter...’. My mind is constantly running back and forth practising and practising my opening statement. ‘This is the hearing of the appeal against the decision of the Court of Appeal. The court held that a duty of care is owed in negligence to…’ – wait a second. I’m rehearsing my speech so much, I completely forgot to pick out what I am going to wear to work. Oh no, you never get a second chance to make a good impression. I need to find the perfect outfit to fully encompass that ‘you-better-rule-in-my-favour’ appearance.
The classic court-wear colour scheme is black and white: a black blazer, a white blouse and a black skirt. The simplicity and elegance of this match not only helps make the lawyer look presentable (presentable fashion, presentable arguments). But it further lets the judges know that ‘that girl is ready.’ Never underestimate the importance of a smart outfit.
Completing the ensemble with my black pointed heeled sling-back sandals (because you can only close the deal in heels), I am now ready to rewrite the law.
Better Sore than Sorry.
Tell me a better job than being a gym trainer… I’ll wait. I mean, you get to hang around fit people getting fitter all the time (actually, you get to coach them), you’re a big motivator without really having to do any of the physical work… I’m just joking. I do exercise… sometimes.
In all seriousness though, I love my job. The gym is a place where people come to relieve their stress, where they find their path to becoming healthier and happier. It fulfils me to see others strive and push themselves every day. Whether they’re doing so by committing to 10 more push-ups or 1 more lap or simply by just not giving up, it inspires me because it reminds me that what doesn’t kill you truly makes you stronger. That’s actually one of the reasons as to why I wished to become a trainer: I wanted to physically be in a place wherein the motto was “no pain, no gain” – and that doesn’t solely apply to fitness. It’s a saying that is suitable for every aspect of life. Without pushing yourself to the limit, you will never grow.
The other (and arguably, lighter) reason behind my choice of a trainer as a profession is simply because activewear equals the best fashion wear. I get the perks of wearing leggings all the time – and I mean, ALL the time. They’re even available in such cute sets that make for the perfect fitness trainer look. And when it does get too hot and heavy, biker shorts are the perfect solution.
Math: The Only Subject that Counts.
Got the worksheets, got my laptop, got my on-the-go breakfast. I’m ready for a 7 am-4 pm school day, educating the future Einsteins and Edisons of the world about the glorious subject of mathematics! Yeah, I know, no one sees it that way except me. But I can’t help it, I love delving into proofs of mathematical induction, solving statistical problems using Poisson distribution, and most importantly, teaching it. “A teacher’s purpose is not to create students in his image, but to develop students who can create their own image”, and I intend to do just that.
On top of it all, working at a school gives me a great gift: a workable dress code. I normally choose to opt for dresses when teaching because of the following reasons. Firstly, it’s loose and comforting so when I’m walking around the classroom all day, I don’t feel tight and confined. Secondly, it’s formal enough to warrant the requisite respect, yet casual enough to make students feel like they can approach me with their queries and challenges. And lastly, it’s available in many designs, colours and styles – so you never run out of options.
All that’s left now is for me to put on my new trendy textile block heels and I’ll teach kids that Mistakes Allow Thinking to Happen (also known as ‘Math’).
Real Women Don’t Do Drama, We Do Business.
Starve your distractions. Feed your focus. I remind myself of this fact as I get ready to end the negotiations on my latest deal. I am a businesswoman. As such, the way I conduct myself has to remain proper, professional and perfect. Between managing operations, overseeing employees, balancing the books and overseeing the company’s finances, I constantly find myself running around the office, but no matter what, I always know my place. And a businesswoman who knows her place, never loses her position.
Today’s agenda involves hiring a new marketing manager and ensuring that the goods have been sold from China, attending a staff meeting – and that’s only before lunch. Oh, and then I have a really important client coming in for his first briefing! The workday that lays ahead of me undoubtedly calls for one of the most white-collar looks I have. It’s time to bring out the big guns: a bold blazer, a pair of matching pants and my valiant heels ready for me to make my mark on the world…
Coats. They’re Not Only For Arts.
It’s time to let my creativity shine. It’s a new day, and a new day means new feelings, and new feelings mean new ways to project my expressions onto my work. They say that art speaks where words are unable to, and that couldn’t hold more truth. I find myself most at peace when I have my paintbrush in my hand, my snow white canvas in front of me and my paint-stained apron hugging my body.
The work I set out I do and paint in the morning 99% of the time ends up being completely and utterly different by the time evening comes. But it is this journey – during which I discover new things, not only about the art realm, but also about myself – which I love the most. To be consumed by passion; to be liberated from fixed guidelines, rules, and standards, this is what wakes me up in the morning. From choosing what to paint to choosing what I wear, it’s all at my discretion. And I always go for brightness because “life is a sea of vibrant colours”, and my art and I are ready to dive right in.
